Artwork Information – George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592–1628), was a strikingly handsome, charismatic courtier who rose from minor gentry to become the dominant royal favourite, lover, and chief advisor to King James I and Charles I. As a powerful, controversial statesman and patron of the arts, he controlled patronage, amassed immense wealth, but faced intense public hatred for failed military campaigns before his assassination.
